San Francisco’s Mission Branch Library has a date to welcome neighbors back: Saturday, Nov. 14. The San Francisco Public Library says the renovated branch will reopen at 1 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting, a blessing by Danza Azteca Xitlalli-Xolotl, entertainment from Lucha Libro and René y Familia, and activities for families. The announcement gives patrons a specific day to plan for and returns a neighborhood service to its historic 24th Street home.

The library’s October update says the restored historic entrance is at 3359 24th St. and that the reopening celebration will begin that afternoon. The Mission Temporary Branch at 1234 Valencia St. is scheduled to close at 6 p.m. on Oct. 31. The two dates leave a gap between the temporary location’s final evening and the permanent branch’s first day back; the library’s notice does not describe interim service arrangements.

Mission Local reported the reopening date on Oct. 9, citing the library’s statement and describing the project’s long path. The branch has been serving patrons from a temporary Valencia Street location since June 2022, the report said. Renovation work began in August 2023. The project had initially been expected to take about two years, but the renovation period stretched longer, with previous opening estimates pushed back. The temporary branch kept library access available while work continued at the landmark building.

The library’s official project page describes the building as a landmarked Carnegie library and says the renovation is meant to make it energy efficient, safe and resilient while preserving its historic character. Mission Local reported that an interior staircase was rebuilt after having been removed in 1997. The library’s project goals also include restoring community space, returning the primary entrance to 24th Street, improving children’s and teen facilities and adding restroom capacity.

The renovated space is expected to serve several age groups and uses. Mission Local reported that the branch includes separate rooms for children and teenagers, with young-adult books in the teen space, as well as a meeting room with capacity for 100 people. The report also describes a new courtyard and two additional bathrooms. Those features make the reopening a return of everyday library services as well as a public event: reading, studying, gathering, and taking part in programs can happen in the permanent neighborhood building again.

The renovation also addresses the building itself. Mission Local reported that the work includes an earthquake retrofit, solar panels and the removal of natural-gas service. The library’s project page has long described goals that include updated building systems, an energy-efficient and resilient facility, improved spaces for children and teens, and a restored community meeting room. The current reopening notice says the library worked with San Francisco Public Works and contractor SJ Amoroso to complete the project.

Mission Local says the temporary Valencia site began serving patrons in June 2022, while renovation work at the permanent building began in August 2023. That distinction helps explain the transition: the temporary site kept neighborhood library access available before and during the building work. SFPL now says the temporary location will close on Oct. 31; its reopening update does not describe service arrangements for the period before Nov. 14.

The Nov. 14 celebration will include cultural and literary programming named by the library: a blessing by Danza Azteca Xitlalli-Xolotl and entertainment from Lucha Libro and René y Familia. SFPL says additional details are still to come. The announcement does not give a full schedule of the performances or activities, so those details should be checked with the library rather than assumed. The confirmed start time for the branch reopening is 1 p.m.

For Mission residents, the practical milestone is clear: the temporary site is expected to close at 6 p.m. Oct. 31, and the restored branch is scheduled to reopen at 1 p.m. Nov. 14. The new rooms and meeting space will be available once the library is back in its permanent building. Until then, the library’s update offers patrons a date, a location and a first look at the public welcome planned for the branch’s return.
