On Wednesday, September 23, a fall chill and steady wind moved through Morris Park in downtown Memphis. People wore jackets as Memphis Grizzlies players and volunteers gathered for a day of service for neighbors experiencing homelessness. The effort centered on practical needs: meals, hygiene supplies and access to local organizations offering support.
The Grizz Take Action Day of Service was organized by the Grizzlies in partnership with Hospitality Hub of Memphis. Before the event, the team said volunteers would distribute meals, pack hygiene bags and help at resource tables led by more than 10 nonprofit organizations. The team described Hospitality Hub as a point of connection for people seeking housing, employment, identification, health care and other resources.
Grizzlies forwards Olivier-Maxence Prosper and Taylor Hendricks joined the volunteers at Morris Park. Action News 5 reported that about 200 volunteers took part, handing out meals and personal-care supplies and connecting people with resources. The Daily Memphian photographed Prosper and Hendricks with volunteers at the park.
The Grizzlies set a goal of serving 400 meals and assembling 1,500 hygiene kits. Action News 5 reported those targets on the day of the event. In its report the following day, The Commercial Appeal said the team reached both goals. The counts describe meals and kits, not the number of people who received services.
Resource tables were part of the plan from the start. The Commercial Appeal reported that resource tents at the park included groups from public health and the medical district, along with Hospitality Hub. The gathering put immediate supplies and information about local services in the same place. The Grizzlies’ announcement framed the day as one way to bring partners together to connect people with resources available across Memphis.
Hospitality Hub’s role is to connect people with services that can help them move out of homelessness. The Grizzlies’ announcement said the organization’s model includes temporary shelter, identification assistance, employment opportunities and referrals to community partners. Those are longer-term supports than the food and hygiene items available that day. The reports describe the event’s goals and available resources; they do not say what services any individual attendee used afterward.
For Prosper, volunteering reflected a lesson he said began at home. The Daily Memphian reported that his parents taught him to give more than he receives. Action News 5 quoted him saying he wanted to give back to the people around him. In The Commercial Appeal, Prosper recalled donating shoes and basketball gear to people in Montreal when he was about 12 or 13. He described that experience as an early introduction to giving back.
Hendricks also connected community service to his life before joining the Grizzlies. The Commercial Appeal reported that he participated in service events through his church as a young person, and that his mother and faith shaped his interest in helping others. Action News 5 quoted him saying it meant a lot for players to show up and volunteer alongside fans. The local gathering let fans, team staff and community organizations share the work.
Action News 5 reported that supplies remaining at the end of the day were returned to community organizations for later distribution. That gave the items a route beyond the hours at Morris Park, through organizations already serving people in Memphis.
A service day has a limited scope. It can make meals and hygiene supplies available, bring community organizations together and point toward services beyond the event. The reports do not claim it resolved the barriers people face when seeking stable housing. They show a local effort that paired practical supplies with the presence of organizations working on those wider needs.
For a few hours, the park brought volunteers, players and service organizations together around that effort. The meal and kit totals offer one measure of the work; the resource tables and partnership with Hospitality Hub describe how the day connected immediate help with pathways to further support.
