The Bellmaker’s Orchard

The bell that did not ring.

Your grandmother’s clock stops at four minutes to dawn. You wait for the small click that usually follows, the one she calls the clock clearing its throat. It never comes. Outside, the orchard is dark. Four hundred glass bells hang between the trees, each holding a tiny reflection of a sky that has forgotten what to do next.

At the kitchen table, the bellmaker has laid out two cups of tea and a pair of spectacles with one missing lens. “I haven’t lost a bell,” she says. “I’ve lost the interval before it rings.” She watches the orchard instead of you. You remember when she could tell which branch needed tending simply by listening from this room.

On the doorstep sits a fox with a folded leaf in its mouth. A pale moth keeps landing on the last warm lantern. Beneath the paving stone, a green shoot has pushed through a crack. Three small things, all waiting. The bellmaker places an empty notebook in your hands. “Write what happens,” she says. “Even if it doesn’t make sense yet.”
